Fracture is an ongoing series exploring the surfaces of rock, photographed in landscapes around the world. Every crack, line and texture is a record of the forces that shaped it, from the movement of continents and the heat of the Earth to millions of years of weathering. From chalk made of microscopic marine fossils to volcanic rock and desert sandstone, each surface records a different chapter of Earth’s history.

Rock is constantly being broken and transformed. Water enters cracks and expands as it freezes, slowly forcing them apart. Repeated heating and cooling causes stone to expand and contract, while deep underground, mineral-rich fluids move through fractures and harden into veins of quartz and calcite, leaving bright lines embedded in the rock.

I was drawn to these marks as a kind of geological writing, traces of enormous forces recorded in the smallest details. Fracture is an ode to the forces that shape our planet and the boundaries that define it.
