Luca Marziale works in abstract micro-landscapes, focusing in on natural elements and organisms found in extreme environments.

Luca Marziale is an Italian-Canadian photographer whose work explores abstract micro-landscapes found in extreme natural environments. Using a medium-format Hasselblad film camera, he focuses on colours, textures, and formations that are often overlooked, turning pieces of the natural world into images that sit between landscape and abstraction.

Born in Lugano, Switzerland, he holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. His large-scale prints have been exhibited in solo and group shows including SCOPE in Basel and Miami, The Other Art Fair in London, CONTEXT in New York City, and MIA Photo Fair in Milan. His work has also been featured by the United Nations, National Geographic, and New Scientist. He is represented by Artstar in New York City and Artistics in Paris, and currently lives and works between Milan and Lugano.

The process

Film
Each image is captured on Fujifilm Provia, a medium format 120 colour slide film that is becoming increasingly difficult to find and has to be sourced in advance.

Capture
Each roll has only 12 frames, so you have to be patient and selective.

Develop
The film is then shipped and developed using the E6 chemical process to bring the images to life. Only a handful of labs worldwide still offer this.

Scan
The film is then has to be scanned high resolution on an Imacon scanner to create a digital file while keeping all the detail.

Print
Final works are produced as C-type prints, the images are exposed onto light-sensitive photographic paper and developed through a traditional chemical process.

Final
A slower, more demanding process that forces you to be patient and stays true to the traditions of photography.
