  • Unearth explores Yellowstone National Park in winter, where heat rising from deep underground meets the frozen world above. The park contains more than 10,000 geothermal features and around half of all the active geysers on Earth.

    Rain and snow seep deep into the ground, where they are heated by the volcanic system and return to the surface as boiling water and steam. In winter, this hidden process becomes visible. Steam rises into the freezing air, snow melts around hot springs, and intense colours emerge against the white landscape. The environment is always changing, as new features appear and others fall silent.

    I was drawn to this meeting of two extremes, the quiet of winter against the fiery activity beneath the surface. In temperatures as low as −35°C, I photographed a landscape transformed by snow, steam and geothermal heat. Unearth reveals a place that may appear calm and motionless, but is continually being shaped by forces hidden below.
