  • Cryo explores a natural phenomenon at Abraham Lake in Alberta, Canada. Each winter bacteria on the lakebed break down decaying plants and other organic matter, releasing methane. The gas rises toward the surface and is caught as the water freezes, leaving thousands of bubbles suspended in the ice, stacked in pale layers beneath the surface.

    I was drawn to this hidden process made visible. At temperatures as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius, wind sweeps the frozen lake clear of snow and exposes the layers below. Bubbles, cracks and marks build textures that look almost painted into the ice. Cryo is a study of a landscape in transition: something normally unseen, held in place for a brief moment, before the weather turns, the ice melts and the bubbles are released again.
