Cryo

Cryo II - Framed
Prints Available in 30 × 30 in & 45 × 45 in

  • Cryo explores a natural phenomenon at Abraham Lake in Alberta, Canada. During winter, methane rises from beneath the lake and becomes trapped as the water freezes, suspending thousands of bubbles inside the ice for a short period each year.

I was drawn to the way this hidden process becomes visible. In temperatures as low as minus 45 degrees Celsius, wind cuts across the frozen surface, clearing snow and revealing the layers below. The marks, bubbles, and cracks create textures that feel almost painted into the ice.

The series looks at a landscape in transition. For a brief moment, something usually unseen is held in place, before the weather changes, the ice melts, and the bubbles disappear again.
