AFAR

-

Afar is a photo series that transports viewers to the scorching and mysterious Northern Afar region of Ethiopia. This hostile environment is among the hottest places on Earth, with temperatures that can exceed 65 degrees Celsius. The images in this series offer a glimpse into a world where extreme temperatures have given rise to one of the oldest known forms of bacteria on Earth- thermophiles. These ancient bacteria, dating back three billion years, continue to captivate and baffle scientists with their ability to survive and even thrive in such blistering temperatures. Many believe that thermophiles are a contributing factor to the most complex forms of life on Earth. In these images, I wanted to abstract the viewer's perspective by omitting any familiar point of reference in relation to the thermophiles. The lack of a clear scale along with saturated colours found in the thermophiles creates an otherworldly and alien-like environment within the frame.
